In Post #1 I said that it’s time for you to unlearn that childhood maxim that it is not appropriate for you to brag. It’s actually very important to you, your career, your legacy, that you learn how to do so now.
I’m not saying that your momma was wrong when you were a toddler but what I now believe is that as we move into middle school, high school, college and on into our careers we need to be prepared to stand up for ourselves and speak to our value at the right time and in the right manner.
So how do you #BragRight? Start by taking an inventory of your Wins. Those things you do daily that add up over time. I can hear what you are thinking— “This clown expects me to write down everything I do?!!!” Well, yeah. Kind of. See—there’s an APP for that. Several in fact. I’m not promoting any of them so it’s up to you to seek them out. Go to your app store and search on ‘Accomplishments’ or ‘Achievements’ or ‘Performance Review’ and see what pops up. I’ve used a couple of them and I LIKE them. Generally the way they work is you set a time of day for an email to pop up with a link to your (usually free for individuals) account and jot down a few notes to remind you in the future what you did today.
What I have learned is that the chances are REALLY good that something you did, oh, last spring may just now be bearing fruit. Were you to learn about this now—especially when you figure out that as a result of your efforts you saved the company enough money to provide lunch to all employees every day for a year and still have some cash left over that, well, that would be worth your knowing AND mentioning to the powers-that-be, huh?
This is how the apps work. You keep a daily ‘notepad’ that they will archive for you and that you can access at any time. Every now and then you will want to go back and see what you noted; say, “Wow!” to yourself, “I forgot all about that!” and then figure out how much money you saved the company.
