Hey! Welcome to 2016!
Now let’s get to work.
After years of careers coaching, I have come to the conclusion that people, young and old, male and female (especially female!), professionals and trades, do NOT know how to promote themselves. People simply do not know how to express their value to those who matter most—management. To solve this problem I wrote a new book called “PROMOTE! It’s Who Knows What You Know that Makes a Career.”
The title says it all. Does your boss know what you do? Do you?!
I mean do you really know how much you contribute to your company?
Newsflash: Probably not.
I want to suggest that you unlearn all that stuff about not bragging that you were taught as a child. See, as a child, it made all the sense in the world because YOU WEREN’T WORKING FOR ANYBODY. (Well, OK. That and no one likes a braggart, huh?) Now you ARE working for somebody and in order for you to get the promotion, get the raise, even keep your job, you need to be able to speak to your value professionally, appropriately and professionally. Did I happen to mention professionally twice? Yup. By design.
It’s time for you to establish a personal promotion in the workplace mindset. Remember, while it’s all about the team—it’s always a little bit more about you! Need some proof? When is the last time the team paid your mortgage or bought your kid school supplies?
Any time you would like to reach out–especially during this series–I would like to hear from you and learn how you have applied some–or all–of the 16 #BragRight tactics, ideas and suggestions that I will be providing for you over my next 16 posts and throughout the year. Watch for them. Share them. Please! I want people to know this stuff.
